Chevy Blazer Used Buying Guide: Known Issues

Some areas that the Blazer has seen some problems with are the engine, brakes, climate system, transmission, and suspension. While these may seem like an automatic dealbreaker, they aren’t in fact most vehicles have some issues at some point in their various generations. These issues aren’t guaranteed to happen. In more recent years, JD Power has even given the Blazer an 85 out of 100 rating or “Great” showing the Blazer has proven to be a reliable vehicle when taken care of.

Taking a deeper dive into the issues will show what you should look out for. The first problem is with the engine. One consumer noted that the vehicle “had a shudder all of a sudden and wouldn’t hold off without a foot accelerator pressed progressively.” This issue was ultimately due to a loose pin on the piston.

Brake issues were reported noting that the vehicle would experience premature pad and rotor wear. In the worst case, sometimes the brakes would fail. The climate system was a point of failure for newer models. Being that we’re used to cold winters, this is something that should be addressed if the hot air stops working.

While the Blazer has transmission problems, this isn’t unique to it as it’s a point of failure for tons of vehicles. With the Blazer, the transmission would cause the vehicle to accelerate suddenly. This issue can range from being scary to harmful, needing immediate attention.

The suspension issues are pretty uncommon, same with the other issues that we’ve gone over, but still just as important to cover. Some consumers noted that the suspension sometimes feels unstable. When met with uneven roads or terrain that may cause damage to your vehicle.
